Particularly great are three pizza places within two blocks of one another on Murray Avenue, in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh: Napoli Pizzeria, Aiello’s Pizza, and my lifelong favorite, Mineo’s Pizza House.  Mineo’s has been a Pittsburgh institution since 1958.  It’s so popular with expatriate Pittsburghers that it sends pies via FedEx to Mineo’s-deprived fans.  My first Mineo’s pie, which I had when I was 5 or 6, was a life-changing experience, and I’ve been a loyal customer ever since.

I recently had a chance to re-visit Mineo’s and it was every bit as good as I remembered.  We quickly devoured a large pie (half plain, half with onions and green pepper).  Living in South Florida, I’m somewhat pizza-deprived.  There’s a lot of good and varied food in South Florida, and I particularly enjoy the many good sushi and Thai restaurants.  But I have yet to find a pizza place that comes close to the best of Pittsburgh.

After the first round, Rocco was tied for the lead, but he finished the tournament tied for 19th. 

It’s a shame he didn’t win. Like me, he’s from Western Pennsylvania. Unlike me, the man can golf and last month, provided the most exciting golf I’ve ever seen when he almost beat Tiger at the U.S. Open after five days of golf and a 19-hole playoff. 

Best wishes to Rocco, though.  What a class act.

As usual, he has assembled thousands of stones to choose from. As usual, he has hand-picked every one. And, as usual, without chiseling or altering the face of the stone in any way, he will make sure they all fit perfectly, no matter how long it takes.
