By Professor NathensonMarch 14, 2015Funmath, pi, pi day I know that law students tend to dislike math. But math can be cool. For those of us not in the know, March 14 is Pi Day, celebrating the mysterious ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The number is irrational, so there is no end to its number of digits. Go to 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592.com (or here) for Pi to a million digits. Or just listen to this Pi rap. Plus, today is not just any Pi Day. It’s March, 14, 2015, making today 3/14/15, or 3.1415. This day comes only once a century. Plus, if the posting is dated at 9:26 AM, then it’s posted 3/14/15 at 9:26, or: 3.1415926. How cool is that? In fact, Pi Day is so cool that even Congress can agree that it’s cool, having recognized Pi Day in a House Resolution. So in celebration of a Once-In-A-Century Pi Day, here are ten uses of Pi (revised from an earlier posting) having nothing to do with math: 10. The title of a movie. 9. A college cheer at MIT. 8. The basis for a book of poetry and stories. 7. Allegedly inaccurate lyrics to a Kate Bush song. 6. Decorations on t-shirts, buttons, mugs, clocks, jewelry, and plushies. 5. A Facebook group. 4. A rap song and violin piece. 3. The name of a dog and a cat. 2. The name of a pizza place, of course! 1. And the winner — a Pi pie! For more Pi fun, check out Pi Day, the source of some of the uses described above. An earlier version of this posting was made at my site digital garbage, with additional information from this posting. Disclaimer: I posted this on March 15, making it an irrational posting about an irrational number. That’s my rationale and I’m sticking to it.
